Monterey Wine Festival History and Activities
The Monterey Wine Festival has been a tradition in the Monterey, California area for over forty years, and this year the 42nd annual wine festival will be held in the historic Custom House Plaza. Locals and travelers flock to this annual event for its award-winning wines, savory meals, and entertainment that can be devoured with all of the senses. Attendees will either get to sample chowders made by professional chefs during the Chowdah Challenge on Saturday or delicious calamari during Sunday’s Kings of Calamari and Masters of Mussels competition, or even both!
All who attend will also get the opportunity to participate in the Cocktail Camp sessions where an acclaimed bartender will offer a variety of cocktail samples while teaching fundamental techniques of crafting delicious drinks. In addition, to live music, beers, and cheeses, participants will include favorite Monterey restaurants like Jack’s Restaurant, Delicious Mode, Flaherty’s Seafood and Grill, and JV’s BBQ. As for participating wineries, attendees can expect to see Oak Farm Vineyards, Roadhouse Winery, Estancia Vineyards, Alexander Valley Vineyards, and many more.
Wine Festival Location
The Custom House Plaza is known for its historic buildings and stunning views, and it’s also home to the Museum of Monterey. The first government building in California is also located in this plaza, and it happens to be the same place where the United States acquired Monterey from Mexico in 1846. The Custom House Plaza is situated in the perfect spot for tourists who want to see the highlights of Monterey. These highlights and attractions include Old Fisherman’s Wharf which has its entrance right next to the Custom House Plaza.

Fisherman’s Wharf is the historic and widely known wharf of the Monterey area that was once filled with the activity of fishing boats and commercial factories. Now, these factory buildings are home to many souvenir shops, bars, restaurants, and other retailers, making it one of the most attractive areas in town. Some favorite Monterey restaurants can also be found here like Cafe Fina, where guests can enjoy excellent meals while looking out over the harbor.
This historic wharf is also the site of the world-famous Cannery Row, home of Monterey’s old sardine packing industry. This street was named in honor of and made popular by the legendary writer John Steinbeck. Now, Cannery Row offers restaurants, shops, and historic sightseeing. How to Attend the Festival
The 2018 Monterey Wine Festival will be held on Saturday, June 9th, and Sunday, June 10th. Tickets for one or both days can be purchased online in advance, and for a small fee, attendees can get early entrance. Several hotels are also situated near the wharf and plaza for convenience and easy access to the festival and Monterey’s other main attractions. With all of its charm, good food, and majestic wildlife, Monterey is the perfect place for relaxing vacations and rejuvenating weekend getaways.
